What makes a healthy community

I enjoyed reading the following from HBR’s article Why modern business is bad for your health. These values should be encouraged more as I see these crossed from time to time in the news of course but perhaps in communities I’m a part of. Like all ethics it’s about an effort not a destination. So it’s a nice reminder to read and share.

Think about it. A healthy community:

  • Believes in reciprocity rather than exploitation.
  • Believes in long-term relationships rather than one-off encounters.
  • Protects its weakest members rather than targeting them for gouging.
  • Worries about the externalities it creates rather than turning a blind eye to them.
  • Discourages its members from playing games that endanger the community rather than encouraging them

The CMO’s Guide to: The Social Landscape

I liked the following chart on Brad Einarsen’s office wall at Klick and asked for the source. It’s 97th Floor’s take on 10 social network choices.

Your website is just a hub. The spokes may matter more as the Web returns to what the Internet has always been great for… discussion:

1. Today 80% of the social community’s engagement with content now happens somewhere other than the site on which content originated.

2. By The Numbers: Twitter Vs. Facebook Vs. Google Buzz

Some tools I’ve liked recently

2. Dropbox for sync’n your files online and across computers.

3. Mapping: Geo tagging check ins and exploring Google Maps Street View.

4. Child, Grandchild, and Great Grandchild pages WordPress

Nice to know WordPress can do this many levels even though this is not the best thing for an easy to use site.

5. Google Docs continues to become my Memex

The distribution channel is being lost to broadband. BitTorrent, the best technology for distribution of TV programming, will destroy TVs economic model.
